They could teach around 6 weeks on every major religion. Christianity, Jewish beliefs,Islam,Hindu, and have a unit on Atheism too. I think it would be nice to learn about other religions and not be so ignorant to other’s beliefs. You wouldn’t be forcing religion on anyone ,simply teaching about different religions and beliefs.

NO. That is for private schools or religious education.

  2. BDOGG says:

That’s great, but this country would never allow it.

  3. Elana says:

    Yes!

The more you know about religion (vs. the teachings of a particular religion), the better citizen you can be.

  4. marseerocks says:

i think that would be a GREAT idea.

  5. Ryan P says:

I think it would be good for the public education.

comparative religion courses are available at college level. i don’t see the need for it at high school level. it’s bad enough that they can’t master the “three R’s”

I have this in school in the 60’s and it was a riot! every denomination was fighting for control of what was Christianity.one day of Judaism and one day of all other false faiths did me a lot of good only got beaten up twice a week as apposed to four times. and they got it all wrong anyway.

as long as it wasnt mandatory sounds like a decent idea.

I think the concept is wonderful…but it would require a constitutional ammendment for it to happen in a public school

Im sure someone will protest about it.

We already have that in the UK and have to sit an examination in it, except it’s completely biased and we only learn about Christianity because our teachers refused to teach us anything else. Me and my friends asked why we didn’t do Islam or Hinduism and she just said that it was ‘easier’.

The concept is good, but it needs to contain lots of different religions, like you said. Personally I would also like to see philosophical teachings and moral theories such as Utilitarianism and Deontology also being taught in school.

That should be included in a World History class. The problem would arise if some teacher proselytized.

No, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Besides people can take Humanities in college and actually you can send a person in high school to a community college to take certain courses this being one of them. Anyway, I don’t think that you should teach this in schools and then have to test them…if it’s not ones religion they shouldn’t have to learn it and be tested unless it’s by choice.

That is already being done in the first year of global history although not for 6 weeks and not about atheism. It is usually called belief systems,
