You are arguing with a satirical definition. You sir are insane.

  2. calomie says:

Just so people won’t be clueless as to what I’m talking about, I was responding to this oft quoted spoof definition of Christianity:

The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree…

    Makes perfect sense.

  3. calomie says:

O.k., then now for some fun. It’s your turn:
The belief that there was nothing and nothing happened to nothing and then nothing magically exploded for no reason, creating everything and then a bunch of everything magically rearranged itself for no reason whatsoever into self-replicating bits, which then turned into dinosaurs.

    Makes perfect sense.

  4. calomie says:

magic – Is it just me or am I really the only one who wanders who the ignorant dolt was who told all you guys that Christians believe in magic and fairies?

Besides, this overused poorly designed attempt to an appeal to ridicule leaves too much out, thinks like:

    God’s grace
    Community
    Covenant
    Love towards others
As much as it is in your control, have peace with other men
    Self-Control
    Perseverance under hardship.

    Ya know? Stuff like that

  5. calomie says:

so that- yes, this enters into it but is by no means close to a full description of the Christian doctrines of Salvation, or in one word; Soteriology.

    a rib-woman – Do you refer to sperm-and-egg-people?

talking snake – Even in the most fundamentalist interpretations, it was not technically the snake that did the convincing or the talking. In fact I seem to recall that this is explicitly said in the NT.

  6. calomie says:

if you engage in a symbolic act of cannibalism-
This is an effective metaphor for sacrifice and a culturally justified one as you consider how Jesus’ 1st Century Jewish audience would have understood Him. Also, we shouldn’t fail to keep the metaphor in the context of the real event the symbol stands for; i.e. accepting the sacrifice.

telepathically- not strictly, since He spiritually is within the faithful. But then you get into the whole debate about Regeneration and Repentance.

  7. calomie says:

Jewish- Not true except for the trivial sense that God is responsible for the Jewish religion.

Zombie- Not even close if you are denoting a will-less being with no continuity of consciousness after its resurrection.

who was his own father- Not historically true of Christian doctrine. The Father and the Son are 2 different Persons in the Godhead, and in no sense does the Father ever have a body unless you are referring to some sort of modalist group. google Councils of Nicea and Chalcedon.

  8. revlooshin says:

much of the phenomena that jesus performed and promised that his followers would perform has been validated by breakthrough research in the fiend of paranormal and parapsychological phenomena. and if you look at what i’m saying you’ll see that i said nothing wishful. i just stated a fact. sorry you can’t grasp it.

  9. calomie says:

How am I twisting history? Your suspicion is wrong, at least for this argument. My only point in this argument is that far from religion hindering science, it has helped it along it’s way, and at least to the Christian thinkers who helped in this regard, science was a way to learn more about God through studying His creation.

  10. element68 says:

now you’re twisting history a bit there pal lol. also I’m only hassling you because I have the sneaky suspicion you’d care to credit the development of science to the Christian god you believe in

  11. calomie says:

“so were the Jewish, muslim, and much more importantly pagans.”

To what is “so” referring to? That they contributed to what we have today in the Scientific field of study? If this is what you are referring to, I won’t disagree. In fact I readily agree with you, they did contribute, which only supports my main point of argument that far from hindering science, religion helped both define it and direct it so it could become what it has for man today.

  12. element68 says:

so were the jewish, muslim, and much more importantly pagans. Do you believe in the tens of thousands of pagan gods like Poseidon? No because you grew up christian (unless you didnt, i didnt read your whole post lol)

  13. calomie says:

I also in no way meant to say that science has it’s ORIGINS in Christianity. I fully realize that science has it’s origins in ancient pre Christian and pre-Jewish civilizations, such as ancient greece, Egypt, ect. All I was saying is that the Christian thinkers of the early modern period (15th to 18th) centuries were instrumental in developing it in the direction it has gone today.

  14. calomie says:

Regarding my comments about Science and Christian thinkers, I have just one clarification. I don’t mean to say that Christianity must be because it played a significant part in the development of scientific study. What I only meant to argue against is the notion that Christianity was a huge hindrance to science and rationality, and the method I chose was to show that historically the opposite is true.

  15. eastariel says:

    53dumey,
When you’re out there shooting down non-Christians, I hope you don’t accidentally kill Jesus. I don’t think He’s a Christian. In fact, I don’t think He would recognize the religion as His teachings. It’s strayed quite a bit.

What ever happened to “love one another as I have loved you”? Didn’t you listen to anything He said?

  19. adamantagnostic says:

That’s the problem with organized religion. It causes the members of any specific faith to equate God with their own subjective view of what God is, and then assert that anyone else who doesn’t agree with their subjective point of view must not believe in God. People need to learn to shut up, ignore the differences, and just coexist for a change.

  20. JackPhelpswho says:
